How to Feel Beautiful Again
There are days when I catch my reflection and hardly recognize the woman looking back at me.
Life has a way of covering us with responsibilities, worries, grief, deadlines, and long to-do lists. Somewhere along the way, we stop noticing the things that once made us feel alive.
When that happens, I find myself returning to the kitchen.
There is something about washing fresh fruit, clipping herbs from the garden, or preparing a simple meal that reminds me to slow down and care for myself again.
Over the years, I've come to believe that beauty grows where care is given. A garden doesn't bloom all at once. It is watered, tended, and given time to flourish.
I think we're much the same.
If you've been feeling disconnected from yourself lately, I'd love to share five gentle ways I return to that feeling of beauty again.
1. Fill Your Kitchen with Living Things
One of the quickest ways I change the feeling of my home is by bringing something living into the kitchen.
Fresh herbs in a small pot.
A bowl of ripe peaches.
A vase filled with flowers from the garden or the market.
There is something quietly reassuring about surrounding ourselves with things that are growing, blooming, and changing with the season. They remind me that beauty is always becoming.
As you look around your kitchen today, ask yourself:
What could I bring into this space that feels alive?
2. Fill Your Plate with Color
One of the simplest ways I care for myself is by filling my plate with colorful foods.
I love a salad overflowing with leafy greens, ripe strawberries, blueberries, peaches, cucumber, herbs, and edible flowers. There is something about those vibrant colors that immediately makes me feel more alive.
As I prepare them, I'm reminded that I'm adding color to my body, too.
It feels less like following a healthy eating plan and more like nourishing myself with everything the season has to offer.
Over time, I've noticed something surprising. When I eat foods that feel fresh, colorful, and full of life, I begin to feel that way, too.
Perhaps it's because I'm taking better care of myself.
Perhaps it's because beauty has always grown where we choose to nourish ourselves.
Either way, I've learned that a colorful plate has a way of brightening far more than my lunch.
As you prepare your next meal, ask yourself:
How could I add one more color to my plate today?
3. Let Fragrance Fill Your Home
One of the quickest ways I change the feeling of my home is with fragrance.
Before I light a candle or put on music, I often begin with the plants themselves.
In spring and summer, I love clipping fresh mint or lemon balm from the garden and placing a few sprigs in a small vase near the kitchen sink. As I brush past them throughout the day, their fresh aroma is released little by little, gently reminding me to pause and breathe.
Some afternoons I'll simmer citrus slices with fresh herbs on the stove, allowing their fragrance to drift through the house. Other days, I'll add a few drops of a beautiful essential oil to my diffuser and let the aroma become part of the room while I cook or write.
I've found that scent has a quiet way of changing how a space feels. Long before a meal is ready, the atmosphere has already become more welcoming, more peaceful, and somehow more alive.
One of the things I've come to appreciate while studying aromatics is that every plant has its own personality. Mint feels bright and refreshing. Lemon balm has long been treasured for its gentle, uplifting nature. Rose reminds me to slow down and notice beauty in the ordinary.
Today, choose one fragrance that makes you feel at home.
Diffuse it.
Simmer it.
Or simply place it beside the window where its presence can be enjoyed throughout the day.
As you do, ask yourself:
How do I want my home to feel when someone walks through the door—even if that someone is me?
4. Prepare Something Beautiful—Just for You
I think many of us save beautiful meals for guests.
Today, I'd love for you to set the table for yourself with the same care.
Arrange your breakfast on your favorite plate.
Pour sparkling water into a beautiful glass.
Fold a linen napkin.
Slice fruit instead of eating it straight from the container.
Light a candle if it brings you joy.
Open the window.
Put on your favorite music.
These little gestures remind us that everyday life is worth celebrating.
You are, too.
5. Speak to Yourself with Kindness
There is an old saying that whatever we tend begins to flourish.
Gardens.
Friendships.
Homes.
I believe the same is true for ourselves.
As you prepare your meal today, notice the way you speak to yourself.
Offer yourself the same patience you would offer a dear friend.
Thank your hands for the work they do.
Appreciate your body for carrying you through another day.
The kitchen has taught me that nourishment reaches far beyond the plate. Sometimes the most meaningful ingredient we bring to the table is compassion.
Before you leave the kitchen today, ask yourself:
What if I spoke to myself today the way I would speak to someone I love?
A Beautiful Place to Begin
Summer Fruit Bowl with Honey & Fresh Mint
Sometimes the most beautiful meals are the ones that remind us to slow down.
Fill a favorite bowl with sliced peaches, strawberries, blueberries, and fresh mint. Drizzle lightly with local honey and finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon.
Serve it in your favorite dish.
Carry it outside if the weather is kind.
Take your time.
Let every bite remind you that beauty often begins with paying attention to the gifts already in front of us.
From The Mikasa
I've discovered that feeling beautiful has very little to do with mirrors.
It grows from the ways we care for ourselves each day.
The kitchen reminds me of that again and again—in fresh herbs on the windowsill, ripe fruit shared with someone I love, the bright scent of citrus on my hands, and the simple act of preparing something beautiful, even when no one else is there to see it.
Perhaps beauty isn't something we have to chase.
Perhaps it's something we grow, one thoughtful moment at a time.
